Air travel has been in the news for quite a long time. At first, newspapers used to report only about airplane trips made by daring single pilots. This means of transportation was more of an entertainment back at that time, and no one could imagine that air travel would become an indispensable part of our society.

Before World War II only a few wealthy citizens could afford to enjoy airline travel. Hughes’ exploits led to the building of many airplane lockers on the fields west of Los Angeles. The efforts of Hughes and other businessmen created an environment that encouraged air travel. It became more affordable, so that larger numbers of travelers could try it. The 1950s were marked by the arrival of the jet – an airplane which could cross the American continent on a single flight.
